Dr. Medge D. Owen is a Professor of Obstetric Anesthesia at Wake Forest School of Medicine and Medical Director of Global Health at The Novant Health Maya Angelou Women’s Health and Wellness Center. She spent 3rd grade through her graduating year at Goddard Public Schools. Dr. Owen has never been known to take on one thing at a time. She kept herself busy her senior year in more than 10 clubs, groups and teams including the well-known Wheatchix, Kayettes, National Honors Society, Debate and of course the Science Club. She was a Fulbright scholar to Turkey in 1997-99 and is the founder and president of Kybele, Inc., a non-profit organization to improve maternal and newborn safety worldwide through innovative partnerships. To date over 900 multidisciplinary physicians, nurses and educators have traveled from 70 institutions in the US, Canada, UK, Europe and Australia to work in 13 countries. She has been an invited lecturer around the world to address inequities in maternal and newborn health and has published extensively in peer reviewed journals. Dr. Owen has received numerous awards related to her global health work, including the 2015 Nicholas M. Greene Award for Outstanding Humanitarian Contribution by the American Society of Anesthesiology. She has received over $4 million in funding and continuously mentors faculty, residents and students across disciplines in global health research and service to improve the lives of women and children in low and middle-income countries worldwide.
